2014 Round 22, Quarter time.

5th August Birthdays.

Bryan Bienke '75, Michael Doughty '79, David Gallagher '80.

PLAYER OF THE DAY. Dean Polo, born 5th August 1986.
Drafted to Richmond in 2004, Dean had to wait until 2006 to play his first senior game.  From then until 2010 he represented the club 56 times and kicked 11 goals.

He caught everyones eye with the skills he displayed in his first season and along with 2009 they were his best years at the club.

Delisted by the Tigers at the end of 2010, he found a new home for the next two seasons at St. Kilda where he played 21 games for 7 goals.

Essendon Team Of The Century Back Line.
Gavin Wanganeen earned a well-deserved spot in a back pocket in this team of champions.
Over 6 seasons from 1991 to 1996 Gavin played 127 games for the club and kicked 64 goals.
Showing immense talent right from the start he was in the clubs 1993 Premiership team and won the Brownlow medal that year also.  Whilst at Essendon he was All Australian 3 times.

Fred Baring was named at full back and had 2 stints at the club.  First with them from 1910 to 1915 and then from 1918 to 1924 he was in a total of 154 games for 92 goals.
A ruckman/defender he was in their 1911, 1912, 1923 and 1924 Flag sides, was Best and Fairest in 1913 and Captain in 1918.

Tom Fitzmaurice spent 6 seasons at Essendon, from 1918 to 1920 and 1922 to 1924 and was in 85 games, scoring 30 goals and fills the other back pocket spot.
A high flying ruckman/centre half back, he liked to leap through packs and break out of the back line.
Personal achievements during his time at the club include Best and Fairest in 1922, ’23 and ’24, Champion of the Colony twice, Premiership player in 1923 and ’24 and Victorian representative in 1919 and every other year he was with Essendon.

Glen Archer.
Glen Archer was named ‘Shinboner of the century’ and quite rightly so as he played 311 games for North Melbourne from 1992 to 2007 as a no holds barred back man and kicked 143 goals.
It is amazing to think that he almost didn’t play when in his first go at the club in the under 19’s he quit after a few weeks to go back to play with his mates at Noble Park.
But North managed to coax him back and in return they got a fine player who was in 2 Premiership teams, played 3 State of Origin games for Victoria and was chosen as All Australian in 1996 and 1998.

Record Setting South.
Round 12 of 1919 was a real day out for South Melbourne as they took revenge for the grand final loss to St. Kilda from 1918 and set some new records along the way.
Beating the Saints by 171 points they kicked a new record winning margin and highest score (29.15.189).
Their 17.4 final quarter was the highest for 1 quarter of Football and the 14 goals for the match to South’s Harold Robertson was a record that stood until 1930.
